How to Play SpellBurst - Word Puzzle Game Guide

Your goal: score high enough to earn at least one star before you run out of moves — and aim for three.

SpellBurst is a word puzzle game played on a 7×11 grid of letter tiles. Spell words to earn points, forge power tiles, and chain them into cascading combos. SpellBurst is word-first: your vocabulary is the single biggest scoring lever in the game. Power tiles and combos amplify what your word is worth — they don't replace it.

🔤 Spelling Words

Drag across adjacent tiles or tap them one by one to spell a word. Letters connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. When you submit a valid word, those tiles clear and new letters drop from the top to fill the gaps.

Each letter has a point value. Common letters (the vowels, plus L, N, S, T, R) are worth a little. Rare letters are worth a lot — Q, Z, J, and X are where the real points hide. Longer words earn a length bonus on top of their letter values, and the bonus ramps up fastest in the middle range — somewhere around where real vocabulary starts to shine.

Rule of thumb: A long word isn't a little better than a short one — it's in a different league entirely. Hunt the big word.

💥 Power Tiles

When you spell a word of 4 or more letters, the last letter in your word transforms into a power tile based on the word's length:

Sunburst (4-letter words) — clears a 3×3 area around itself
Tsunami (5-letter words) — clears the entire horizontal row
Flamestrike (6+ letter words) — clears the entire vertical column

Big single activations earn a bonus for tiles cleared — a lone Tsunami sweeping a full row or a Flamestrike clearing a full column scores extra on top of the base power points, so the score matches the spectacle.

Chain Reactions

Power tiles activate automatically when they reach the bottom row. When tiles above drop down to fill gaps, any power tile that lands at the bottom fires immediately — and its blast can drop more power tiles into the bottom row, which fire in turn. One well-placed word can set off a chain that transforms the entire board.

🔥 Streaks

Your streak is shown as four circles on screen:

Every move that activates at least one power tile fills a circle and raises your multiplier for your next word. A move without any activation gently decays the streak by one circle — never a hard reset. At max streak, your words score 1.5×, and power tiles get a smaller streak boost on top.

The key is consistency — even a single small activation each move keeps the streak climbing.

🏆 Scoring

Your word earns points from its letter values and its length bonus. Power tiles earn more points when they activate, based on what they clear — with a little extra for big-visual clears like a full-row Tsunami or full-column Flamestrike. Your streak then multiplies everything.

When power tiles chain in a single move, you hit combo milestones along the way — and nowhere in between:

SPARK — 2 activations: a sparkle and haptic
SUPER! — 4 activations: on-screen text and distinct VFX
EPIC! — 6 activations: the rare top tier

The tiers stack. Reaching EPIC means SPARK and SUPER already fired earlier in the same chain, so your word is amplified by all three. Combo bonuses multiply your word score, so great words earn much bigger bonuses than weak ones.

The cascade is the amplifier — the word is the thing being amplified. A lucky short word that stumbles into a SUPER! earns a fraction of what a strong long word triggering the same chain would. And stopping one activation short of a tier means you didn't hit it at all — push the chain when you can.

⭐ Levels & Stars

Each level has a goal and a limited number of moves. Hitting the target score earns 1, 2, or 3 stars depending on how well you played. Stars and gold unlock new levels as you progress through the map.

When a level completes with at least 1 star, any power tiles left on the board detonate in a Bonus Burst — leftover powers still contribute, but at a reduced value. Using them during play pays more.

💡 Tips

Invest in the word first. Words have the biggest impact on score, and combos multiply what your word was worth. A weak word triggering SUPER! earns a fraction of what a strong word earns from the same chain. Build the word; the cascade will do the rest.
Don't break the streak. Even one activation per move keeps your multiplier climbing. Streak is compound interest — it costs nothing to maintain but a lot to rebuild.
Aim at the milestones. A chain of 4 (SUPER!) scores dramatically more than a chain of 3. A chain of 6 (EPIC!) dramatically more than 5. Stopping one activation short of a tier leaves most of the cascade's value on the table — push the chain when a milestone is in reach.
Think vertically. Flamestrikes clearing columns often trigger more cascades than horizontal Tsunamis, since vertical clears are more likely to drop new power tiles down to the bottom row where they fire.
Set up the board. Position power tiles so they overlap each other's blast area — a Tsunami on the same row as a Sunburst will chain into it. The best combos are the ones you engineer, not the ones you stumble into.
Hunt rare letters. Q, Z, J, and X are worth far more than common tiles. A shorter word built around a rare letter often outscores a longer word without one — especially when a cascade is about to amplify it.
Don't waste a cascade on a junk word. If a big chain is about to trigger, wait for a word worth amplifying. A strong word carrying the cascade scores dramatically more than a filler word that happens to fire the same chain.
